Kinja'd!!!

So I found a really helpful member of the Oppo community on Facebook who offered to help contact the seller (via his sister, who is a working linguist in Europe, thanks again!) And having someone speak to him on the phone in his own language seems to have worked, he is getting back in touch via e-mail and will send some additional pictures. I am then/now in the position of trying to actually BUY a car in Spain and get it to a port so it can be shipped over... I have a quote from ShipOverseas for $1350, which seems to include flatbed pickup at the seller’s location and trucking to the port (the clarity of their quote is unclear... should probably call them) but that’s a port to port price, I would still have to get it to the port. I have no experience in this and would love some tips/input/help if anyone can offer them!

Seller sent me some high-res pictures, still nothing of the undercarriage, but these look pretty amazingly rust-free. Seller says it’s got a few dents and scratches, but is in good shape generally, tires are brand new. He says he’s been driving it daily and it used to belong to his father. He sent me a video too, but it was corrupted and I could only recover audio, which sounds like a car starting easily, revving, and being driven around a parking garage for a minute or two.... I’ve asked him to resend it, but as we are going into Friday night and the weekend in Spain, I doubt I’ll hear back soon.

What kind of shipping is it for the $1,350? I ask b/c I’ve shipped a car from Europe to NA via container, and can definitely be of service there...

I wonder if Flavien could offer any tips or suggestions? I imagine he’s shipped his fair share of cars to the US from Japan! He might have some info on the import process state-side?

1) Do insist on pictures of the underside . It’s an offroader, he should have no problems getting underneath. His place is in the the north of Spain, a very rainy and damp area. Although not as severe as in a place with snow rust could be a problem.

2) Ask him when the latest technical inspection was (similar to the MoT in the UK, TüV in Germany, etc). The car’s papers should have a stamp or something confirming if it was favourable (or not) and the date. Ask for relevant picture of the papers indicating last inspection etc.

If not favourable he should have a report stating why. If it was favourable but with an advisory notice (i.e., with a relatively minor problem) there should be also codes/mention of what was wrong.

Car looks very good but smack in the centre of the driver’s door there seems to be a patch of paint with a different texture or colour. Ditto with the lower front corner of same door and door sill (right on top of where the max load sticker is).

That max load sticker also means this car seems to have been registered as a commercial vehicle (a common tax-dodging trick). Being so old it should undergo tech inspection every six months or something like that. Certainly more often than just annually.

Good luck!

The shipping was RoRo, including customs broker fee, port to port from Sagunto Spain, to Newark NJ, the company I got a quote from (ShipOverseas.com) does not offer Flatbed service in Spain.... so I may need to look at another option... Would be glad to hear any thought or suggestions you have!

OK...it definitely has seam rust in the usual places. Rear of front wheel arches, in the wells behind the rear wheels and the inside of the tailgate (right side of plate under the badge at the curve. Fortunately these are all easy to repair and prevent reoccurrence. Expect to have to redo all the window seals and pinchweld seals.

I also note absolutely no underbody wax or spray coating... especially in the wheel arches. You’ll be needing to do that Stateside.

Overall, it’s all there. If it’s properly priced and mechanically sound...

Yes, I’m a bit occupied at the moment. It’s a 1400+ (900 miles) one way trip for me, just to get to Wales. And that’s excluding the Channel.

Anyway, RoRo is probably your best/cheapest bet. I have shipped an E30 Touring to Texas that way once. Cost was similar if I’m not mistaken. If it’s an all in deal to get it to the US it sounds fair, although I obviously haven’t compared relevant prices.

Yeah, the lack of undercoating caught me off-guard too, but that means it can’t hide the rough patches... It looks like the rust is all quite superficial, especially for a 25-year-old car. I sort of believe that it has only 21,000 kilometers on it. Asking price is €1950, or about $2400 USD.

Thanks, I will push for some uncarriage pics. The seller says the paint is rough and it has some scratches and dents, but insists it has almost no rust. The add on AutoScout24 says “Recent inspection”, but don’t know what exactly that means...

Doesn’t sound too bad...while I’ve heard of RoRo costing less for a longer route, I don’t know if those figures included broker fees, etc.

Container shipping has its benefits: your car won’t be damaged (not the case w/ RoRo), and the price of admission gets you an empty container which you can fill as you see fit.

The company I used is AGS Movers – they are very professional, and take care of practically everything. I’d highly recommend them!

In my case, they shipped a 20' container ‘door-to-door’ from Belgrade, Serbia, to Vancouver, BC for 2200 euro (~2700 USD). Included in the price was loading/lashing the car in, trucking the container from Belgrade to the departure port, total loss insurance, and access to a tracking service. Removal costs – trucking the container from the port in Vancouver to a warehouse where the car can be taken out – were extra, and I took care of the customs work myself.

I’d expect them to quote you noticeably less than that, given that Spain to NJ is a much shorter trip... Might even end up being not that much more than RoRo! Definitely worth looking into.

That certainly is comprehensive service... I would like to avoid paying more than the purchase price of the vehicle for shipping, but I have contacted them for a quote, thanks for the recommendation!

Anytime! Hopefully the numbers line up.

Lemme know what the quote ends up being, BTW. I’m curious...
